2011 All-WE/HV field hockey team

Meet the athletes who excelled during the 2011 field hockey season. The awards were selected by MSG Varsity's staff of reporters and editors:

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
EMMA BOZEK
Lakeland, Sr., Midfield

The all-state senior center midfielder played a big role in leading her team to a third-straight New York State title in Class B. Bozek, who will continue her field hockey career at the University of North Carolina, led Section 1 in points with 76 and assists with 36. She was second in the section in goals with 40.

COACH OF THE YEAR
SHARON SARSEN
Lakeland

The legendary coach guided Lakeland to a 21-1 record and its third consecutive New York State Class B title. She has 487 career wins and has been the head coach for all six of Lakeland’s state championship teams.

TEAM OF THE YEAR
LAKELAND

Lakeland captured its third-straight New York State Class B title by defeating Garden City, 3-1. They also defeated rival Rye for the third straight year in the Section 1 final. The high-powered Hornets outscored opponents 153-12 over 22 games. During their three wins in the state tournament they outscored the opposition 15-1.

FIRST TEAM

EMMA BOZEK
Lakeland, Sr., Midfield

The all-state senior center midfielder leaves Lakeland as one of its most accomplished players in program history. Bozek, who will continue her field hockey career at the University of North Carolina, led Section 1 in points with 76 and assists with 36. She was second in the section in goals with 40.

SHANNON SCAVELLI
Lakeland, Sr., Forward

Scavelli led Section 1 in scoring with 48 goals and also had 25 assists. She set a single-season record at Lakeland in goals scored and also holds the most career goals in program history with 135. The senior forward will play field hockey for the University of Michigan in the fall.

JESSICA GARDINER
Mamaroneck, Sr., Midfield

Gardiner, who was an all-state selection, guided the Tigers to another Section 1 title and a third straight appearance in the Class A state championship game. The senior midfielder finished the season with 23 goals and 20 assists. She’ll continue her field hockey career at Colgate.

JESSICA CORBIN
Mamaroneck, Sr., Midfield

The all-state senior midfielder scored 14 goals and had nine assists. She was a vital part of a dominant Tigers midfield unit.

BROOKE BONFIGLIO
Bronxville, Jr., Midfield

The junior anchored the midfield for the Broncos and helped them win a Section 1 and regional championship in Class C. She was named to the all-state team.

ANNIE VANWAGENEN
Rye, Sr., Midfield

VanWagenen, who will play at Williams College next season, was selected to the Golden Dozen team and was named all-state for the third-straight season. The senior midfielder has been a starter since her freshman year and helped the Garnets reach the Section 1 Class B final for the third year in a row. She finished the season with 17 goals and 12 assists.

EMMA BRINKMAN
Rye, Sr., Forward

The senior forward led an explosive Rye squad in scoring with 28 goals and also added 15 assists. She was named all-state and helped the Garnets finish with a 16-2-1 record.

GIANNA BENSAIA
Lakeland, Jr., Defense

Bensaia played a vital role defensively for the Hornets. The all-state junior shut down Garden City’s top scorer Jenna Fuchs in the Class B state championship game and also blanketed Rye’s Emma Brinkman in the Section 1 final. She finished the season with eight goals and eight assists.

MOLLY MALONE
Ossining, Jr., Midfield

The all-state junior midfielder created so much for the Ossining attack and helped lead them to the Section 1 Class A final where the Pride fell to Mamaroneck. Malone finished the season with 20 goals and 15 assists.

HELEN SHABINSKY
Nyack, Sr., Defense

The senior anchored the defense of an Indians team that reached the Section 1 Class B semifinals. She was named all-state.

DAYNA MERCER
John Jay-Cross River, Sr., Goalie

The all-state senior goalkeeper basically stood on her head for the Indians all season. She was a big factor in helping them reach the Section 1 Class A quarterfinals and finish with an 11-5-2 record.
