Bronxville field hockey falls in NYS semis
Bronxville’s sensational season came to an end in a 1-0 loss to Section 3’s Cazenovia in the NYS Class C semifinals on Saturday at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
The defending state champion Lakers gained the lead on a goal by Emmajean Speer with just 3:43 remaining in the game on a penalty corner.
“Our defense was right there, but it ended up going in the corner of the goal,” Bronxville coach Jacquelyn Frawley said. “We all had our chances — it was a 50-50 game — and they came out with the goal.”
Bronxville had its opportunities to score throughout the contest, but couldn’t find the back of the net.
“We played a very offensive game in the second half and had our chances,” Frawley said. “It was a great game. We were more than happy with the way the girls played.”
On a penalty stroke in the first half, Brooke Bonfiglio’s shot was saved by Cazenovia goalie Lauren Devine, who finished with seven saves.
“They had some strong defensive players,” Frawley said of Cazenovia. “They were marking our forwards pretty well.”
Goalkeeper Katie Knox made four saves for the Broncos.
Despite the loss, Bronxville had a very successful campaign where it finished with a record of 16-3-1 and captured its first Section 1 crown since 2009.
“Going into the season, you’re always looking for that sectional title,” Frawley said. “When we reached that, we were ecstatic to have that title and that means so much to us. And then to keep going as regional champions that really showed how much heart they have and how much they really wanted it. To get to the state semifinal round is something they’ll never forget.”
