Lakeland cruises past Camden in NYS semis
For the Lakeland field hockey team, it was business as usual.
The Hornets handily defeated Section 3’s Camden, 7-0, in the NYS Class B semifinals on Saturday at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
The two-time defending state champions advance to tomorrow’s state championship game where they will face Section 8’s Garden City at noon at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. Lakeland bested Garden City, 2-0, in the state final last season.
The explosive Hornets jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead behind first-half goals from senior Shannon Scavelli, senior Emma Bozek and junior Kristen Conroy. Scavelli’s tally was assisted by junior Rebecca Bard.
“We just talked a lot as a team and made sure our intensity was good (in the first half),” said Scavelli, who finished with two goals and now holds Lakeland’s single-season record for goals in a season with 46. “We did come out a little flat in the beginning. Once we scored that first goal it was kind of a relief and we kept moving forward.”
Scavelli (one assist), Bozek (one assist), sophomore Gabby Celentano (one assist) and Bard each added a goal in the second half.
The Blue Devils only registered four penalty corners to Lakeland’s 11. Senior goalie Krista Servedio finished with one save for the Hornets (20-1). Backup goalie Mairead Hourihan also had one save.
“They played amazing,” Scavelli said of the defense. “They didn’t let anything come to our goalie, Krista Servedio. Rebecca Bard really stepped up and Allie O’Mara was solid back there. It was great to see everyone come together and stay strong in a big game.”
Lakeland is hoping to come home tomorrow with a third-straight state title which would be the sixth in program history. But they know beating Garden City again will be no easy task.
“We just have to come out strong,” Scavelli said. “If we play our game, hopefully it’ll be a good outcome.”
