    NEW YORK STATE FINAL FOUR

March 10 and 11 at Utica Memorial Auditorium

    DIVISION 1

    Finals
    Sunday, March 11

    Suffern 3, Pittsford 2

Suffern scored three unanswered goals — two in the third period — and defeated Section 5 champion Pittsford, 3-2, in the New York State Division 1 hockey championship game at the Utica Memorial Auditorium on Sunday.

Pittsford took a 2-1 lead into the third period before the Mounties rallied back. Steve Scholer tied the game 2-2 with 14:28 remaining on an assist from Mike Redgate. Scholer had two goals in the game.

Willie Sanchez then scored what proved to be the winning goal on a breakaway less than two minutes later for Suffern (21-2-3).

The title is the first for a Section 1 team since Suffern claimed a championship in 1992, which is the section's lone title all-time.

Suffern 2, West Genesee 2 (Suffern wins 2-0 in a shootout)

Ian Adler's clutch goal gave Suffern a 2-0 shootout victory over Section 3's West Genesee. The two teams played to a 2-2 draw through four overtime periods. Leading scorer Willie Sanchez also scored in the shootout. Mounties goalie Tyler Stark, who stopped all three of West Genesee's shootout attempts, made 40 saves to preserve the victory. With the victory, Suffern avenged a heartbreaking 4-3 (OT) loss to the Wildcats back in the 2009-10 state semis.

West Genesee's Erik Kurz tied the game at 2-2 with 23.4 seconds left in the third period to force overtime. Teammate Jimmy Sauda notched the Wildcats' other goal, giving them a 1-0 lead with 11:56 left in the first period.

Suffern senior forward John Redgate buried the equalizer on a power play with 7:40 left in the opening period. He scored it off an assist from senior defenseman Adam Brenner. Sanchez then scored the go-ahead goal just 39 seconds into the third period on a 5-on-3 power play. Ian Adler and Steve Scholer were credited with assists.

The Wildcats, who entered the matchup undefeated, finished the year at 24-0-1. The Mounties (20-2-3) will play the winner of Saratoga (Section 2) and Pittsford (Section 5) in the championship tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. Suffern won Section 1's first and only NYS title back in 1992.
