For the seventh year in a row, Section 1’s highest honor remains in Mount Vernon.
Isaiah Cousins, the Knights’ star senior point guard, was voted Mr. Basketball by the Section 1 coaches association at a meeting on Sunday morning. Cousins is the sixth different Mount Vernon player to win the award in the last seven years.
Past recipients including Jonathan Mitchell, Michael Coburn, Kevin Jones, Sherrod Wright and Jabarie Hinds, who won it the last two years.
Cousins was voted just ahead of Mike McCahey of Clarkstown South. They, along with Will Trawick of Fox Lane, Tyler Sayre of Albertus Magnus, Sky Williams of Tuckahoe and Randy Stephens of Mount Vernon were named to the Tri-County all-star team.
Tappan Zee coach George Gaine was voted as the Coach of the Year. Gaine has led his team to an 18-0 record in the regular season and a No. 1 seed in the Class A playoffs.
All of the honorees, as well as the players All-Conference and All-League, will be honored at a banquet on March 20 at the Doubletree in Tarrytown.
