Our month-long series continues as we name South Side’s girls soccer player Christina Klaum as one of MSGVarsity.com’s Top 30 Players to Watch for the 2012-13 school year.
The junior forward/midfielder came up big in big stretches for the South Side soccer team. Klaum scored 20 goals in the 2011 season, with 11 of those coming in the postseason alone. Her performance helped lead South Side to its 16th New York State girls soccer championship.
Klaum scored a key game-tying goal in the second half of South Side’s dramatic 3-2, triple overtime win over Division Avenue to capture the Class A Nassau County title.
"Nobody really knew throughout the season what it meant to play with heart," Klaum told Newsday’s James Crepea following the county championship. "We all gave it 110 percent. We came back twice and I thought, 'Wow we could really do it now.' "
One can say Klaum literally carried the Cyclones to a state championship. She had one less goal in the postseason than South Side’s next five scorers combined. Klaum was named the Class A finals MVP for her herculean efforts.
The good news for South Side is that the Cyclones will have the high-power Klaum for the next two years and will more than likely make similar runs to the state tournament.
