Bruno, Fuchs lead GC's romp past Darien
GARDEN CITY, NY -- They've reached celebrity status.
It's gotten to the point at which Garden City is drawing gaggles of screaming autograph seekers.
As Jenna Fuchs, Alexandra Bruno and Catherine McTiernan walked off their home field Monday, they were surrounded by a group of small girls, youth league players, bashfully asking the stars to sign an orange ball.
It's girls lacrosse's version of Bieber fever -- call it Trojan commotion. Bruno and Fuchs each scored seven goals and Megan McDonald made nine saves as Garden City rocked Connecticut power Darien, 18-7.
It was the fifth straight game in which the Trojans (6-0) totaled 18 goals. Oh, it was also their 54th straight win, a showstopping performance against a team ranked 20th in the country.
Funny enough, this was Garden City's potential "trap" game. "We couldn't afford to overlook them," Bruno said in reference to the second-ranked Trojans' game against No. 1 McDonogh (Owings Mills, Md.) on Saturday.
"We relish the opportunity. They're Connecticut champs and they're used to winning. We wanted to take it to them early and I wanted to set a tone."
That she did, scoring six goals in the first half. Bruno's free-position score 6:46 in put Garden City up 5-0.
The Trojans led 12-3 at halftime.
Bruno also had three assists, and Catherine Dickinson two goals.
"We knew we had to go low against their goalie [Caylee Waters] and we executed," said Fuchs, who scored five of her goals on bouncers.
As the offense pulled away, McDonald and a double-teaming defense squashed any chances of a Blue Wave rally. "On defense, the communication has been great," defender Linda Attanasio said. "We have each other's backs . . . "
Fritts scored twice and Kristy Gilbert had a goal and an assist for Darien (3-1).
"I was seeing the ball well," said McDonald, who had two spectacular crouching saves on free-position shots. "It was just my lucky day, I guess."
No, it was business as usual. The lucky day belonged to the kids with the autographed ball.
