MSG Varsity's "High School Sportsdesk" goes regional

MSG Varsity announced today that its signature daily sports show, “High School SportsDesk,” is “going deep” with a new format that will provide more in-depth, local high school sports coverage and reporting than ever before.  To help cover all the action, MSG Varsity is adding two of its high school sports experts –Steve Gelbs and Keith Irizarry – to its “High School SportsDesk” team.

With this new format, MSG Varsity is expanding from one show covering the tri-state area to four simultaneous shows covering four distinct regions -- New Jersey, Long Island, Connecticut / Westchester / Hudson Valley, and New York City.  This will result in even more coverage of high school sports, including feature reports, weekly polls, highlights and more.  The shows will air each weeknight during the school season starting Tuesday, September 6, at 7:00 p.m.

“With ‘High School SportsDesk’s’ expanded coverage, we’re delivering the games and stories that matter most to our viewers in each region, while increasing exposure for local student athletes,” said Michael Lardner, Senior Vice President and Executive Producer, MSG Varsity. “We welcome Steve Gelbs and Keith Irizarry, who we know will be great additions to the ‘High School SportsDesk’ team, and look forward to rolling out the new format when football season kicks off this September.”

Steve Gelbs, former co-host of Rangers Radio and feature reporter for MSG Varsity, will join current “High School SportsDesk” co-anchor Jared Greenberg to host the Long Island and New Jersey programs. Keith Irizarry, former host of national baseball previews for MLB.tv and play-by-play announcer for MSG Varsity will partner with current co-anchor Shawna Ryan to host the broadcasts in New York City and the Connecticut/Westchester/Hudson Valley region.

“High School SportsDesk” airs weeknights from 7:00 p.m – 7:30 p.m. on Cablevision’s iO TV (Channel 14).  The program includes athlete interviews and feature stories on a wide range of high school sports topics.  “Plays of the Week,” team rankings, profiles, coaches’ discussions and teasers for upcoming games, match-ups and rivalries are all part of this fast-moving sports show.
