Ridgewood strikes balance, upsets Summit

Garcia Logan, Max Luing and Peter Reuter each struck for two goals and two assists to steer Ridgewood, No. 9 in the MSG Varsity Power Rankings, to a 10-7 win over No. 2 and previously unbeaten Summit Tuesday afternoon in Summit.
Steven Casella aided Ridgewood's balanced attack with two goals and Connor O'Shea added one goal and three assists to send Summit to its first loss in 16 games and to only its second defeat in its last 85 contests.
The Hilltoppers had constructed a state-record 68-game winning streak that was snapped by Bridgewater-Raritan last June in the Tournament of Champions final. Summit had beaten Ridgewood three times during that historic run, including a come-from-behind, 7-6 decision last season.
Jack Allard netted a goal for Ridgewood (11-6), which built a 3-1 lead in the opening quarter, was up 5-3 at the half and 8-5 after three periods. The robust goal production against such a formidable defense came on the heels of an 8-4 loss to Don Bosco Prep Saturday in the Bergen County Tournament final.
Luing, a senior attackman, continued his steady offensive play by turning in his fourth straight multiple-goal game and his sixth in the last seven outings. He leads the Maroons with 26 goals.
David Kalin scored two goals and Austin Carbone and Tommy Celmer each contributed one goal and one assist for Summit, held to its second lowest goal total this season. The Hilltoppers had edged Chatham, 6-5, on April 30.
Ridgewood outshot Summit, 27-21, won the ground ball battle, 26-22, and was almost even in faceoffs. Summit won 11 of 21 behind the efforts of Tom Lackaye and Ryan Bringewatt, but was unable to make full use of that possession time. Ridgewood's Noah Pounds finished with seven saves while Alex Salazar recorded 11 for Summit.
Ridgewood posted its first victory over the Hilltoppers since an 8-6 decision in 2008. The Maroons went on to win the Group 3 state title that season behind the play of Chris Pedersen, Kevin Vaughan, Ben Petrglia and Nick Rispoli. Summit was 15-6 that season, but would go on to win the Tournament of Champions the next two seasons and win group state titles three consecutive years.
