Teaneck gets top seed in Bergen tourney
Teaneck, No. 4 in the MSG Varsity New Jersey Top 15, was tabbed as the top seed for the Bergen County Tournament, which tips off on Saturday with preliminary-round action.
The field features 32 teams led by Teaneck (12-1), which has won seven straight since a 67-52 loss to top-ranked Shabazz on Jan. 7. The Highwaywomen are powered by Florida State-bound senior guard Jakelle King-Gilchrist (17.8 ppg.) and blossoming sophomore center Kayla Gibb (20.7 ppg.).
Defending champion Immaculate Heart (11-2) drew the second seed and comes in having won seven of its last eight contests. Senior forward Raquel Scott supplied a strong presence in the paint while junior guard Samantha Wilkes runs the offense with a slick passing hand.
Third-seeded Northern Highlands (12-2), which also features an interior force in junior Jackie Reyneke (13.1 ppg.), has lost this season to Teaneck and IHA.
The prelims are set for Saturday with the round of 16 slated for Feb. 4. Paramus Catholic will host the quarterfinals on Feb. 12 before the event moves to Ramapo College for the semifinals on Feb. 19 and the championship on Feb. 26.
