    Roxbury girls lacrosse recap

With the lacrosse season coming to a close, the Roxbury Lady Gaels varsity lacrosse team isn’t going to finish off with a winning record, but they are going to finish with the battle scars of another hard fought year on the turf. The Lady Gaels have battled their way to a 6-12 record, with just a few games left to play, all of them on the road.

Despite winning six games, the Lady Gaels’ season can be summed up by hard fought games, close losses, and at the same time, close wins.  “We didn’t play great defensively to start the season,” Roxbury Head Coach Kevin Bewalder said. “Still, we kept it together, and we got better on the defensive end as the season went on,” Bewalder added.  “Our overall play improved as the season went on.”

Before the season, Bewalder had the option to move his girls down to a weaker conference. He turned the option down and kept his team in the same conference, because he believed in his girls. “We would have had a few more wins, and a few less losses if we dropped down,” Bewalder said. “The girls really stepped up to the challenge to being in a strong conference.”

The Lady Gaels were able to hang in with some of the best girls lacrosse teams in the state. They lost in the last seconds to Mount Olive 13-11 in early May. Also in May, the team lost to Randolph on the road, 11-10, despite outscoring Randolph in the second half. “Some of our best performances resulted in losses,” coach Bewalder said. “That’s just how it goes sometimes.”

Although the Lady Gaels took some hard losses, they also picked up some good wins. Roxbury picked up one-goal wins against Ramapo and Jefferson on the road, and against Wayne Hills on their home field. Later in the season, Roxbury scored 10 goals in the second half to run past St. Elizabeth High School.
