Seton Hall Prep, No. 8 in The MSG Varsity Power Rankings, earned the top seed for the Essex County Tournament, which gets underway this weekend with six first-round games.
The Prep (9-4) came in ahead of 12th-ranked Glen Ridge (8-4), which snared its first ECT title last year with a 9-6 championship decision over Seton Hall. The Pirates beat Glen Ridge for the 2010 title and now seek their fourth crown, as does fourth-seeded Montclair.
Seton Hall--led on offense by Paul Werner and Glen Ridge resident Tim Mulrenan--and Glen Ridge each earned a bye until the quarterfinals on Tuesday, all at the home field of the higher seeds. The semifinals are Thursday, also at the higher seed, and the championship is set for May 12 at Verona High at 2:30 p.m.
Seton Hall handed Glen Ridge an 8-3 defeat April 12 behind the outstanding goalkeeping of George Peck (19 saves) and the balanced offense of Mulrenan, Werner and O'Shane Kirlew, each with two goals. Glen Ridge senior Jameson Smith netted all three goals that day for Glen Ridge, all in the opening half.
