Roder, Hoboken ready for North Bergen
Every time Kenny Roder takes the mound, that game is a hyped event for anyone involved in Hoboken baseball and beyond.
In the eyes of any opponent, though, it's not exactly a party to which they'd like to go. The latest foe to draw an unfortunate invite to the Roder Rodeo? North Bergen.
With Roder's last outing coming five days ago, it's likely he will get the call for this contest.
So the tiny, 5-foot-9 lefthanded ace blessed with a 90 miles-per-hour fastball and knee-buckling curve, aims to shut down the Bruins on Monday afternoon, when the two Hudson County rivals square off in a live-streamed baseball showdown.
The game will be live-streamed on MSGVarsity.com at 4 p.m.
Roder has struck out 75 batters in just 30 innings. In his last start five days ago, he whiffed 18 and surrendered just two hits in seven brilliant innings of a 1-0 blanking against Hudson Catholic.
Prior to that, Roder struck out 16 St. Anthony hitters in the school's first seven-inning perfect game in almost 50 years. If he continues this type of rousing success, the Redwings -- now 7-6 on the season -- could be big-time sleepers come playoff time.
Oh, and Roder may get some looks come Major League Baseball Draft day.
North Bergen, which enters 11-5 overall, is coming off an 8-4 win over Memorial and would like to begin constructing a winning streak as the county playoffs loom. Facing Roder, however, could put a temporary damper on those plans.
