Long Island reigns in Eastern States

Months ago at the New York State wrestling champions Long Island showed their muscle by coming away with nine Division I weight class winners.

Today, X-Cel, a conglomeration of Long Island wrestlers, defeated Apex of New Jersey, 56-9, in the Second Annual Eastern States Dual Championships.

Long Island started off strong with victories in the first two matches as John Busiello pinned Dino Cancilleri in 3:55 to kick off the championship dual meet. Then Jose Rodriguez, the 106 lb. New York State runner-up, put on a clinic as he defeated Matt Seitz 10-2. However, Apex battled back as Mike Russo won 7-1 over Nick Garone in the 113-lb. weight class.

From there, X-Cel rattled off eight straight wins, including two major decisions, a technical fall, and a pin.

Mike D’Angelo proved dominant as he was the lone tech fall with a 16-1 victory over Jack Taddeo. Longwood’s Corey Rasheed at 145 lb. kept the momentum going for X-Cel as he pinned Pete Hillburn 40 seconds into the second period. New York State champions Sean McCabe (120) and Dylan Palacio (160) each continued to show what gained them a state title as they won with 9-2 and 18-5 respectively.

Rasheed was named X-Cel’s most outstanding wrestler, while Apex’s 195-lb. Tony Pafumi went home as the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler. Pafumi had a strong performance in the 195 lb. as he edged Dylan Seybolt 11-4 in the finals.

Sachem East tops North for third

In the consolation meet, Sachem East defeated Sachem North by the final of 42-22 to claim third place. The Flaming Arrows from the East tallied victories in 10 of the 15 different weight classes. Joe Atkins (120) and Jakob Restrepo (138) each gained six points for their pins in the consolation match.

East started off the consolation match well with a 7-6 decision for Bobby Pease over Anthony Sparacio in the 99-lb. weight class. After a forfeit from North in the 106, Nick Perez of Sachem North pulled off an impressive major decision victory over Mike Abbondanza in the 113.

From there, East dominated to the tune of eight consecutive victories from 120 until 170.

In the final four matches of the afternoon, Sachem North gained 12 of their 22 team points as they claimed victories in the 182 and 195 via forfeits. In the 220 and 285, Anthony Confessore and Steven Mills each pulled off impressive wins defeating their counterparts, 5-0 and 8-4 respectively.
