Brogno: Around the state in softball (5/4)
The end of a streak: Second-ranked Robbinsville lost to Allentown on Wednesday, 3-2. The loss comes just five days after the Ravens crushed the Redbirds, 10-3, in Robbinsville. The defeat ends an impressive 37-game winning streak, which included a perfect 25-0 state-championship season a year ago. It was also the Ravens' first loss since May 25, 2010.
Magnificent Morris: Four ranked teams will play in tonight's scheduled Morris county semifinals. In Game One, No. 14 Morris Knolls (winners of 13 straight) takes on No. 5 Chatham, led by dominating senior pitcher Amanda Fazio.
Game Two features No. 12 Whippany Park, which is undefeated at 16-0, against No. 7 Pequannock -- the three-time defending county champs. By the way, Pequannock's Dana Nielsen pitched a gem on Saturday vs. DePaul. Nielsen carried a perfect game into the seventh and ended up hurling a two-hit shutout, striking out 16 along the way.
Bergen collision course: Two more undefeated teams reside in Bergen County. Top-ranked IHA is now 19-0 after blasting Ridgewood on Monday. Super sophomore Steph Thomas threw yet another no-hitter.
The big surprise, however, in Bergen has to be Ramsey. The Rams have now run their record to 15-0, behind the brilliant pitching of senior Ally Mendes and a powerful, unforgiving lineup.
Last week, Ramsey beat Indian Hills, 13-6, and then clobbered Paramus, 8-0. Agaiinst the Braves, Penn State-bound Lexi Knief blasted a three-run homer that would have gone out of any ballpark, and Arielle Schulman went 4-for-5 with a triple, double and five RBI.
