Our list of the Top 30 athletes on Long Island rolls on...literally, as we recognize Patchogue-Medford girls bowler Jessica Calandra as one of our top athletes to watch in the 2012-13 school year.
Calandra made history the past school year in Suffolk County by breaking the county's record for average, 222.44 -- four better than the previous mark (Ali Martin, East Islip, 2009 - 218.4). The senior threw a 1,294 series in the county tournament.
The Patchogue-Medford star rolled a perfect 300 game this year, her first of her career, and saw a streak of seven consecutive matches in which she rolled a 700 series or better throughout the regular season.
"It was a surreal feeling," Calandra told MSG Varsity's Gregg Sarra about her perfect game. "It was very nerve-wracking, but I had to do it."
She led the Suffolk County team in the postseason, where she shot a 1,178 series en route to a championship in the Sectional-All Star tournament.
Calandra was named the Long Island girls bowler of the year and to Newsday's All-Long Island bowling team.
