Livecast primer: West Islip vs. HHH East

Two rebuilding boys basketball programs meet as MSGVarsity.com Gametime Livecast presents as League II hoops contest between Half Hollow Hills East and West Islip.

Tip-off is slated to commence at 4:30 p.m. in Dix Hills.

The Lions of West Islip (1-9 overall, 1-5 conf.) are looking to get back on the winning track after what has been an extremely frustrating six-game schnide. The past four contests have come very close, with all defeats decided by less than eight points.

Its most recent loss came at the hands of undefeated Central Islip, which saw CI’s Isaiah Booker hit a three-pointer to force overtime with 32 seconds, only to see the Musketeers pull away in overtime for a 54-47 victory.

West Islip is led by Dan Cunningham, who has hit double-digits in points in every game but three he has appeared in for the Lions.

The Lions do have a little momentum going for them in this contest however, as their lone win of the season have come against Hills East back on December 20 in a 57-53 victory. Chris Anderson led the way for West Islip with 21 points, and draining six three-pointers.

Hills East are looking to avenge that loss to the Lions a month and a half ago.

Unforunately for the Thunderbirds, things have been as frustrating as their opponents having gone 2-9 overall and piling a 1-6 conference record.

Hills East’s most recent victory came not long ago, last week to be exact, against conference opponent Northport in a close 51-49 decision. Both Nate Schwartz and Ryan Nitti both led the Thunderbirds in scoring with 10 points each, as Michael Chemtob scored the winning bucket with 15 seconds left to give Hills East its first conference victory.

Nitti has been on a tear as of late for the Thunderbirds, averaging 15.6 points per game in his last three contests for Hills East, with his season high coming on January 12 – a 21 point effort in a 60-55 defeat to Central Islip.

Be sure to join Carl Reuter and Rob Pavinelli on the call at Half Hollow Hills East High School at 4:30 p.m. only on MSGVarsity.com Gametime Livecast.
