Wheatley tops in Long Island Class B

Jonathan Kowalczyk didn't know who was beside him. The Wheatley senior raced across the field as the ball reached the right side of the 18-yard box but he didn't realize it was his teammate, Daniel Solomon, who had possession of the ball and the players collided.

"I thought [Solomon] was a defender, so I didn't know what was going on," Kowalczyk said, "When I looked over to see who it was, I realized it was my teammate."

After recovering from the collision, Solomon attempted a shot which fortunately went off the side of his foot and directly to Kowalczyk, who buried it from 9 yards out 47 seconds into the second overtime to give Wheatley the Long Island Class B boys soccer championship over Mattituck, 1-0, Tuesday at Diamond in the Pines.

The Wildcats (11-3-2) earned their first Long Island Championship since 2004 and fifth overall, and advanced to the Southeast Regional final at Blind Brook (Sec. I), a 2-0 winner over Burke Catholic (Sec. IX) Tuesday.

"I didn't realize that [Kowalczyk] called me off, so immediately I was thinking, 'he's definitely going to be [ticked] after the play,' " Solomon said of the game's final sequence.

Solomon came into the game at the start of the second overtime and his fresh legs paid dividends for Wheatley, which dominated the game from start to finish but could not capitalize on countless opportunities.

Austin Scoggin made 18 saves for Mattituck (11-7-1) to keep the game scoreless for 105 minutes.

"I don't think one team can dominate a game so much and squeak it out, 1-0," Wheatley coach Steve Cadet said. "Their goalie played amazing. One of the best performances I've ever seen by a player."

Eric Orologio made five saves for Wheatley.
