Livecast primer: LI Div. I & II boys VB final

The top boys volleyball teams across Long Island will descend onto Hofstra University to compete for the title of best on Long Island as MSGVarsity.com presents a special boys volleyball doubleheader on Gametime Livecast.

Our first meeting will see two teams, Massapequa and Lindenhurst, that sport undefeated regular season conference records competing for the Long Island Division I championship at 12:00 p.m.

Massapequa enters this contest with a 16-0 conference regular season record (20-1 overall) and have steamrolled through the competition across Long Island. The Chiefs had no problem getting to this point in their route to the Long Island Championship.

It all started with a convincing 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-22) sweep of Herricks in the Nassau Class AA quarterfinals. Christian Smith had 26 assists, while Chris Husmann added 16 kills in the winning effort. Massapequa followed it up with yet another sweep, this time coming against Long Beach (25-15, 25-12, 25-21), and another 26-assist effort from Smith. Husmann and Steve Woessner added 13 kills apiece in the semifinals. The Chiefs captured its third straight Nassau title on Thursday against Plainview-JFK, but needed four games to do this time. Husmann upped his game and provided 20 kills, while Smith added 25 assists and 13 kills of his own.

The Chiefs will face a very tough Lindenhurst team – a team that frequently has been ranked as MSGVarsity.com’s number one boys volleyball team on Long Island. The Bulldogs did not have to do as much work as their opponents to get to the Long Island title game, but they are there nonetheless. Lindenhurst started it off with a sweep of Bay Shore in the Class A semifinals. Gerard Gigante had nine kills and Michael Comens added 11 of his own in the winning effort. The Bulldogs followed it up and punched their ticket to the LIC with a 3-1 win over Northport, in which Gigante had 12 kills and 22 digs in the win.

Our second-half of the doubleheader will see Nassau County Division II champion, Floral Park, take on Suffolk’s best Eastport-South Manor at 2:30 p.m. (time subject to change).

Suffolk champion Eastport-South Manor finished the regular season with an undefeated 9-0 record (15-1 overall) and had a relatively easy road to the Long Island title game. The Sharks earned a bye straight to the Suffolk County championship and won it in convincing fashion, sweeping Sayville 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-23). Ryan Brisson's 20 assists and six digs and John Bohnenblusch's 16 kills and four blocks led ESM to the title game.

Floral Park, on the other hand, despite being the top seed in Nassau Class B had to run the gamut to get to Hofstra University. The Knights journey started in the quarterfinals by sweeping Valley Stream South, and then followed it up with a sweep of Jericho in the semis. Floral Park then punched its ticket to Hofstra with a 3-1 win over Bellmore-JFK to win the Nassau Class B title. Will Wichart had 18 assists, seven kills and five blocks in the win.

It should be an exciting afternoon of boys volleyball action. Join Carl Reuter and Colin Cosell on the call starting at 12 noon from Hofstra University.
