Robinson fans 11 as Holy Trinity tops St. John the Baptist
Hicksville, NY – Alex Robinson was a well-known pitcher around the CHSAA, but after the kind of performance he had on a beautiful, near summer-like day, everyone around Long Island should take notice.
The Holy Trinity lefty who will be headed to the University of Maryland, hurled five scoreless innings giving up a paltry three hits while striking out 11 batters en route to his second win of the season in a 9-1 victory over St. John the Baptist.
“I felt really good coming into the game,” Robinson said. “My running exercises got me feeling good and I just went out there and tried to help my team win.”
Robinson was dominant throughout his five innings, in which he amassed multiple strikeouts in four of them, including striking out the side in the first and third.
“Well the biggest thing is in the first inning to get warmed up,” Robinson continues. “Get fully out there, get a feel for the mound, get a feel for the umpire, and just go out there and throw strikes.”
Throwing strikes is what he did consistently.
After striking out the side in the first, the Titans (7-3) were able to back their pitcher up with some offense. Back-to-back singles by Jack Parenty and Tyler Kapela set the table for Patrick Madigan’s infield RBI single deep in the whole to the shortstop, scoring the aforementioned Parenty. Following Madigan was one of the top catchers in the entire Island in Chris Hardardt, he was able to sky a deep fly ball to rightfield for the sacrifice fly to score Kapela, and give his ball club a 2-0 lead.
Kapela found a knack for getting on base early in the game.
“I like batting in the two hole because all I have to do is get on base a few times, and we always have good hitters behind us to get us in,” says the senior Kapela. “Jack (Parenty) and I just have got to get on base and they will bring us in every time.”
In the home half of the second inning, the Titans rallied seven hits in a row that plated six runs, essentially breaking the game wide-open in the early stages of the game. The big blow of the inning went to Kapela who ripped a two-run double to right centerfield gap.
The DH went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Parenty was 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base, Hardardt was 1-for-2 with two RBIs on the day, and Tim Rice went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI to lead Holy Trinity offensively.
Keith Brodesser went 2-for-3 on the afternoon for SJB (4-1), while Chris Lemorocco drove in the lone run for the Cougars with his seventh inning RBI single to bring in Brodesser.
However, the main story was the outstanding pitching of the Titans.
“It’s amazing. It really is,” says Kapela about watching Robinson’s pitching performance. “I really enjoy watching him pitch. It’s something special, and I wish him luck in college.”
With performances like that, you can really see that Robinson makes his own luck.
