Holy Trinity’s Katie Poppe is starting to get synonymous with something. That term is 1,000th point scorer. Coming into Sunday’s 44-40 victory over Sacred Heart, Poppe had already reached the milestone in her high school career. However, she had not reached it solely as a member of the Lady Titans.

After playing her first couple varsity seasons at Garden City High School, Poppe transferred to Holy Trinity three years ago as a sophomore where she immediately made impact on the Lady Titans squad.

“It wasn’t just big that she got it at Holy Trinity, but she plays hard all game long, and eventually she plays even harder and gets it done” says Head Coach John Scalfaro.

Hard is exactly what the game was against Sacred Heart. Merely 13 points away from the personal goal, she was matched up with Lady Spartan Nina Corcoran which forced Poppe to fight and claw her way to getting free for a shot.

Poppe got her stroke going in the second quarter after a cold first period where she was unable to get the ball in the hoop. She was able to complete the rare four-point play when she was hacked as she drained a three pointer, successfully hitting the free throw only put her within nine points.

However, the Sacred Heart defense was relentless, so she needed to change up her approach. When talking about her approach Coach Scalfaro says “she’s strong inside, she’s a big, strong guard, we get her inside where she can be physical, once that happens, then the outside opens up for her.”

Though the achievement wasn’t the most important factor in this game. “I knew I was close, but it was more about the win,” Poppe says.

The bucket that finally gave her 1,000 was a terrific jumper that tied the score at 40 in the final minutes of play. She would go on to make clutch free throws that secured her team’s major CHSAA conference victory, and finish with 16 points on the afternoon.

When asked what the feeling is for this kind of a milestone, Poppe responded “it’s crazy, it’s so rewarding, this feeling is amazing, I’ve worked so hard for the three years that I’ve been here, and it’s paying off.”

Paying off indeed as her team looks to continue on their stellar season for a chance to claim the CHSAA title behind the steady stroke of one of the best players on Long Island.
