Boogie Brozoski is a 5-foot-5 freshman, but don’t let he size and age fool you. She is already making a name for herself, and on Friday she led Long Island Lutheran to a 56-42 win against Francis Lewis at the Tayshana (Chicken) Murphy Classic at Murry Bergtraum.
Brozoski had 23 points, including five 3-pointers, but Crusaders coach Rich Slater was more impressed with her multi-dimensional game.
“She’s not selfish,” he said. “She gets everyone on the floor involved. Boogie definitely had one of her better floor games today.”
Jazmine Hamlet had 18 points for Francis Lewis, which jumped out to a 12-11 lead after one quarter, but LuHi had a second-quarter surge and led 28-22 at the break.
“We lack consistency,” Francis Lewis coach Steve Tsai, whose team defeated Long Island Lutheran on a buzzer-beater last year. “We come out winning and fall flat in the third. I’m happy we didn’t get as frustrated, but we still have to work on controlling the ball better.”
The Crusaders went on a 10-4 run in the third quarter and had a 12-point edge going into the fourth quarter, which is when Brozoski, a Cambria Heights, Queens native, helped her team with strong rebounding and good court vision.
“It’s important to get everyone involved,” Brozoski said. “I think I did a good job scoring and getting my team involved. It feels great to score and help my team. I’ve been playing with them since eighth grade. We have a strong team and we communicate very well.”
