Only three wrestlers from Long Island Catholic schools have won the ultimate title -- the NYSPHSAA championship. Only five of 449 qualifiers from Catholic schools over 25 years have reached the pinnacle of high school wrestling.
The first from Long Island to etch his name in state history was Robert Murphy of Chaminade in 1986. Then there was a pair of wrestlers from St. Anthony's, Lucas Magnani in 2000 and Grant Greene in 2009.
Jamel Hudson would like to be next. The top-ranked wrestler in the state at 132 pounds qualified for the NYSPHSAA tournament with a 47-second pin over William Wilson of Monsignor Farrell late Sunday night to capture his third straight CHSAA state title.
"I am extremely focused on one match at a time but ultimately, my goal is to win a state tournament in Albany," said Hudson, who improved to 33-1. "This was another step in the right direction."
Said St. Anthony's coach Tony Walters: "His only loss this season came up a weight class. We're excited about his chances upstate."
Hudson also took home all of the awards hardware -- he was voted most outstanding wrestler and had the most pins in the least amount of time with three in 3:03.
St. Anthony's crowned six champions at the Catholic state tournament and took home the team title for the third straight season. The Friars scored 271 points to outscore runner-up Farrell with 247.
Friars sophomore Fred Dunau earned the 106-pound class with a 13-2 win over Jim Gill of St. John the Baptist.
"The key to Freddy Dunau is that he's an underrated wrestler," Walters said. "He's an unknown and that can work in his favor upstate. I think he can win it all because he hasn't been seen by a lot of the wrestlers in his class this year."
St. Anthony's junior John Vrasidas earned the 160-pound crown with a 9-0 win over Evan Lenci of Kellenberg. Vrasidas avenged an early-season loss to Farrell's Andrew Psomas in the semifinal round to reach the title bout. He beat Psomas, 5-2, to advance.
"He wasn't expected to win," Walters said. "He did a great job."
St. Anthony's also crowned John Twomey at 99 pounds but the sophomore will be unable to make the trip to Albany and he'll be replaced by runner-up William Guntekunst, a freshman, who lost to Twomey, 7-0, in the final. "It's an opportunity for a young wrestler," Walters said.
Matt Szilagyi won the 152-pound crown and Andrew Auriemma took first at 220 pounds.
"You have to win our state tournament to qualify for the public state tournament," Walters said. "There are no wild cards like the public schools. We get one competitor in each weight. We got our guys through to the next level but it was a stressful weekend."
Kellenberg senior Pat Skinner, who took sixth last year at the NYSPHSAA tournament, earned his third straight CHSAA state title, with a 10-6 win over Joe Russ of St. Anthony's. He'll be joined at the state tournament by Firebirds teammate Matt Matouzzi, who won the 145-pound title with an 8-3 win over Farrell's Paul Hartnett.
"I expect to win the state tournament in Albany," said Skinner, 38-2 this year and 137-27 in his career. "It's a very tough tournament but it comes down to who has the best two-day tournament."
