Lights, camera, action and get ready for the Oceanside Student Film Festival on April 27.  Right now students from the elementary schools, the middle school and the high school are working on films for this annual event.  The theme this year is “The Next Big Thing” and aspiring filmmakers are encouraged to make movies about the people and the ideas that could be the next big thing.

“Our students ARE 'The Next Big Thing, all working hard to utilize all of their creativity to make films that inspire others. ” said Mr. Robert Fenter, the Oceanside Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and the driving force behind the film festival. “The film festival is the varsity sport for our filmmakers and we couldn't be more proud of them!”

The students of Oceanside Elementary School No. 5 are so excited about the event that over thirty students have formed their own video club with their advisor Dr. Marino.

The evening is a celebration of student filmmaking with a red carpet staging area where student filmmakers are interviewed by the broadcasting students and photographed by the paparazzi. Audience members are encouraged to dress as their favorite movie characters and the evening is hosted by student emcees.  The evening culminates in an Academy Awards style trophy presentation. The students who create the winning films in each category receive an exclusive “Foovie” trophy which was designed and crafted by middle school teacher Michael Lawton.

Each year the film festival pairs with a charity. This year the proceeds from the sale of refreshments and DVDs will go to Oceanside Community Services who offer assistance to needy Oceanside families.  Admission is free but if you would like to help, non perishable items will be collected.

It is an evening where the entire community comes together for a great cause so save the date April 27th at 7PM and come to the Oceanside Student Film Festival.
