Fantastic four: Brentwood wins Suffolk title
Ever Torres has been learning to deal with getting marked more. The Brentwood freshman has opened eyes with 16 goals going into Thursday night's game.
It's safe to say he's handling it well. Torres scored two goals to lead No. 5 Brentwood to a 4-0 win over No. 6 West Islip in the Suffolk Class AA boys soccer final. Brentwood (17-2-1), the defending state champion, will play Hicksville in the Long Island Class AA championship at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Adelphi. West Islip finishes 15-2-2.
"I knew he was going to be this good," Brentwood coach Ron Eden said. "A player like this comes once in a lifetime. He has great vision and is well beyond his years."
Andrew Ortega scored with 3:43 left in the first half before Torres blasted a shot from 25 yards over the goalkeeper's head to make it 2-0 with 31:14 left in the game. Torres scored again with 2:17 left and Alan Samayoa added the final score.
"That kid is unbelievable," Brentwood's Jeffrey Medina said of Torres. "I always heard he was great, but he surprised me."
Brentwood won its fourth consecutive county championship and is the first team in the largest class to win four straight. The Indians have won six championships in the last seven seasons.
"It's always hard in any sport to win championships," Medina said. "Luckily, we have a great coach behind us. He's always there for us."
Added Eden: "This is a special win. I never thought we would be able to run the gauntlet like this. We're a young team and this is the hardest tournament I have been in."
