Mepham routs Long Beach in dual meet
Nassau County: look out for the Pirates.
Mepham rode the strength of three pins and a technical fall as the Pirates routed Long Beach, 50-21 in a dual meet Wednesday night.
The Pirates earned its first dual meet win of the year, while Long Beach fell to 0-2 in duals.
Corey Heller got things started off with a quick pin at 1:21 over Zamar Allen in the 195 pound division to give Mepham a fast 6-0 lead. Long Beach fought back to cut the deficit and take the lead six matches in with a Jaemen Connelly pin 48 seconds into his match with Mike Caruso to give the Marines an 18-12 lead.
That lead wouldn't last long and the Pirates can thank John Sherlock for that.
Sherlock downed Steven Sewkumar in a quick, high-intensity match of the night. Sewkumar jumped out to a 7-4 lead early in the second period, however Sherlock surprised the Marine with a quick take down and earned two sets of three back-points to take a 15-9 lead at the end of the middle frame. The Mepham grappler held on for an 18-11 decisio as the Pirates rode that momentum.
Mepham would dominate from thereonin, winning eight of its next nine matches and finishing off with two pins by Dan Tracy (170) and Steven Lambert (182).
