LI Winter Big 10: Uniondale makes debut

    1. WANTAGH WRESTLING The Warriors moved into the No. 1 spot last week and improved to 16-0 in dual-meet action. The Warriors clinched the conference dual-meet title and are also ranked No. 1 in the state.

    2. SMITHTOWN BOYS BOWLING The Bulls continued to dominate, winning their only match last week over Whitman. Smithtown is 11-0 and has a county-best 1,035 team average. With four bowlers averaging over 200, their talent and depth will make them a tough out in Suffolk tournament on Feb. 4.

    3. EAST ISLIP GIRLS BOWLING The Redmen, right now, look unstoppable. They improved to 11-0 with two wins last week and have yet to drop a game. Four of the six best averages in Suffolk belong to East Islip bowlers (led by Kristina Freitag and Lena Sorrentino, each with a 212), and they've got two others in the top 15.

    4. WARD MELVILLE GIRLS FENCING Ward Melville now has the fourth longest winning streak in LI sports history. The Patriots continued their winning streak with wins against Newfield on Wednesday (19-8) and Friday (23-4).

    5. ST. ANTHONY'S HOCKEY The Friars have allowed just 1.5 goals per game and are breezing through the CHSHL. No team has challenged them but as the end of the season nears the road gets tougher for the 10-0 Friars.

    6. CONNETQUOT WRESTLING The Thunderbirds continue to make noise in Suffolk League II after an impressive team victory at the Smithtown Tournament. Connetquot's Sean McCabe beat former defending state champion Mark West for the second time in three matches. They beat Northport and West Islip in dual meet action this week.

    7. GREAT NECK SOUTH BOYS SWIMMING Great Neck South improved to 7-0 with another resounding victory. The Rebels swim into the BIG 10 after beating Long Beach, 131-54.

    8. UNIONDALE BOYS BASKETBALL Uniondale (11-0) remained unbeaten with a pair of 30-plus point victories to move into the BIG 10. The Knights had an 81-50 win over Hempstead, behind 22 points from Shaquille Mosley, and a 79-44 win over Syosset, behind 23 points from Kenny Woodard. Uniondale has won by an average margin of 22.7 points led by Mosley's 24.5 point per game.

    9. CONNETQUOT/SAYVILLE HOCKEY The T-Birds extended their league-best winning streak to 13 games with a lopsided win over last-place Ward Melville. The team now has an astounding goal differential of plus-109 and a 16-1 record.

    10. LONG ISLAND LUTHERAN BOYS BASKETBALL The Crusaders continue to play a tough schedule to prepare for the state Federation tournament at Albany in March. They lost to Academy of the New Church (Pa.) in the prestigious Big Apple Classic at Baruch College last Saturday. LuHi took the week off and returns to action against Evan Maxwell and tough East Islip on Tuesday night.

On the outside looking in -- Ward Melville boys fencing, Long Island Lutheran girls basketball, Harborfields boys basketball, St. Anthony's girls basketball, Plainview JFK girls gymnastics.
