Harrison, Baldwin slow down North Babylon
On a night that honored a fallen sister, the Baldwin girls basketball team kept their strong start to the season going.
Tyra Harrison and Mariah Butler each scored 14 points as the Bruins (4-1) knocked off perennial Suffolk County powerhouse North Babylon, 52-46, on Saturday evening.
The heart and determination of winning one in front of the home crowd on the 12th Annual Girls’ Holiday Basketball Tournament in memory of Chanee Monique Brown was evident from Baldwin. Brown lost her life tragically in the spring of 2006 from a car accident, but the efforts of Harrison, Butler, Ashley McAdams, as well as the rest of the Baldwin squad honored their fallen Bruin.
Harrison posted nine of her 14 in the first half, while Butler completely dominated the second half scoring all 14 of hers. McAdams had a very strong first half as she scored six points to go along with five rebounds, eventually finishing off with 8 boards in the contest.
The first half was as balanced a competition as you could see. Baldwin held the largest lead of the first half just prior to the end of the first quarter when Tiara Place (9 points, 4 rebounds) capped the rally with a free throw to make it 16-10.
North Babylon (3-1), however, would stop at nothing to keep it tight and they were able to take their first lead of the game at 24-22 with a Makeda Nicholas (14 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks) offensive rebound and put back. That lead was short-lived as the Bruins would close out the half with baskets by McAdams and Place to give Baldwin a 26-24 lead at the break.
The third quarter is where Baldwin began to take over, in particular Mariah Butler.
Butler would engineer her squad to a 9-0 that had started with the Bulldogs on top at 31-29, but would eventually lift the Bruins to an insurmountable 38-31 advantage. To go along with Butler’s 14 points, she also added six rebounds, four assists, and a pair of steals.
Baldwin would cruise with the lead from there as they would take this one with a six-point victory.
North Babylon was led by Brianna Jones who had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, the efforts of Nicholas, and an outstanding effort on the glass by Kennethah Harden who managed to rip down 12 rebounds in the game.
