The St. Anthony's girls soccer team wasn't able to practice for a week because of superstorm Sandy, but that didn't bother them one bit.

In fact, the Friars used it as motivation in their CHSAA AA state playoff run and overwhelmed Notre Dame Academy in the final, 6-0, in Buffalo Sunday.

It was the second straight state title for St. Anthony's (19-2-1) and the 20th overall.

"It was more difficult to win the title this year than last year because we had a lot of sophomores and juniors we never played with," senior defender Daniella Ganiaris said.

Players said the lack of practice just made them even more eager to get back on the field.

"This feels great," said senior goalkeeper Danielle Maurice, who made one save. "We pulled together so much more because of the hurricane."

Maggie Bill had a goal and two assists, and Jessica Lukas, Samantha Wargo each had a goal and an assist for the Friars. Sydney Arestivo, Tricia Hanley and Gabriela Nastasi also scored in the win.

Backup goalkeeper Kelly DiGregorio had two saves, while Casandra Davis had one.

Bill scored 26 minutes in to give St. Anthony's a 1-0 lead. Arestivo and Hanley followed with goals that gave the Friars a 3-0 halftime lead.

It was an impressive showing for the St. Anthony's offense, especially considering the team hadn't played together much before the state playoffs began. The team guarded against any rust by working out individually during the week off.

St. Anthony's run to the state title began on Friday, as it defeated Sacred Heart of Buffalo, 2-0, in the semifinals.

Said Hanley: "I went running every day and I know most of the other girls worked out, too."

    It showed on the field.
