11. Boys Volleyball — Plainview JFK beats Port Washington (Nov. 8) No. 3 Plainview JFK upended No. 2 Port Washington, 25-19, 23-25, 25-17, 25-19, in the Nassau Class A semifinals to advance to its second consecutive county championship. Evan Schwartz had 45 assists, and Zach Feldman added 14 kills and 13 digs.

10. Girls Tennis — Northport beats Half Hollow Hills West (Oct. 28) Kristen Bomkamp beat Lauren Salzano, 6-3, 7-5, in the deciding third singles match to lead No. 19 Northport over No. 2 Half Hollow Hills West, 4-3, in the Suffolk semifinals. Northport went on to lose, 5-2, in the finals. The Tigers finished the season undefeated in their league and 11-1 overall. But because they play in the less competitive League II, they were given a No. 19 seed entering the tournament. Northport also edged No. 3 Westhampton in the second round and No. 11 Commack in the quarterfinals, both 4-3, to advance to its match against Hills West.

9. Girls Volleyball — Bay Shore beats Connetquot (Oct. 24) Erika Dannenfelser (above) had 17 digs and six blocks as Bay Shore swept Connetquot, 25-19, 27-25, 25-23. Connetquot was coming off wins against West Islip and Lindenhurst and ended up qualifying for the Class AA playoffs. The Marauders entered the League II match with just a 2-6 record. Courtney Bocchieri added 10 blocks and six kills for Bay Shore.

8. Football — East Rockaway beats Locust Valley (Nov. 10) This could actually be a double-upset, as East Rockaway beat Locust Valley in both the regular-season finale and the semifinals of the Nassau IV playoffs. During Week 8, on a soaked and muddy field, the Rocks handed Locust Valley its lone defeat of the regular season, a 21-0 loss. Two weeks later, No. 6 East Rockaway beat No. 1 Locust Valley, 30-13, in the semis. Nick Ulip had 110 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries.

7. Girls Soccer — Calhoun beats Farmingdale (Oct. 31) Kristina Gandolfo scored twice, including the game-winner 1:13 into overtime, to lead No. 9 Calhoun over top-seeded Farmingdale, 2-1, in the Nassau Class AA quarterfinals. Farmingdale entered the game with just one loss playing in the county’s top league. Calhoun was undefeated, but in Conference AA-II. Alissa Battaglia made 13 saves.

6. Football — Baldwin beats Freeport (Oct. 29) Playing on a field covered in mud and snow, Baldwin beat previously undefeated Freeport, 32-18, in Nassau I. Pat Dillon’s 12-yard touchdown run with 4:43 left in the third quarter put Baldwin ahead by the final margin of victory. Treyvon Mask had 205 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries and Dillon rushed for two touchdowns. Baldwin hadn’t beaten Freeport, which at the time was the defending Class I Long Island champ, since the 2007 season.

5. Boys Soccer — Hicksville beats Brentwood (Nov. 13) Peter DiLorenzo and Kyle Poetzch scored as Hicksville beat Brentwood, 2-0, in the Long Island Class AA championship, the first time the Comets had triumphed in the LIC since 1983. Hicksville had lost to Brentwood, 3-0, two years previous in the LIC. In 2011, Brentwood came out of a tough Suffolk bracket and entered the game a three-time defending LIC Class AA champion. They had won a state title two of the past three seasons. This time, Hicksville went on to win a state title, something the soccer team hadn’t done since 1979.

4. Girls Soccer — Islip beats Sayville (Nov. 4) Morgan Santoro scored on a free kick at 7:34 in the first half to break a scoreless tie and lead No. 5 Islip over No. 1 Sayville in the Suffolk Class A semifinals. Sayville came into the game undefeated at 16-0 and Islip had a 6-8-2 record. Islip overcame a number of injuries during the season — nevermind having to compete against several Class AA teams in its league — to pull off the upset.

3. Football — Bay Shore beats Floyd (Oct. 29) Bay Shore clinched a playoff spot with a shocking 24-7 victory over Floyd in Suffolk I. It was the fourth win in a row for Bay Shore, which entered the game just 3-4. The Marauders overcame severe weather — “It was raining sideways,” coach Jim Giattino said. Griffin Rock, a linebacker, made 12 tackles, five for losses, two sacks and a fumble recovery. Ousman Camara, also a linebacker, made 18 tackles.

2. Field Hockey — Babylon beats Pierson/Bridgehampton (Nov. 8) Bridget McCarthy scored with 6:47 left in the first half and No. 2 Babylon held on to upset No. 1 Pierson/Bridgehampton, 1-0, in the Suffolk Class C championship. Pierson/Bridgehampton, the heavy favorite, was a state finalist in 2010 while Babylon was making its first playoff appearance since 1997. Dottie Barker made four saves in the shutout.

1. Football — Newfield beats Garden City (Nov. 26) Julian Santiago (65 yards, 17 carries) had the go-ahead score on a 1-yard run with 11:25 left to give Newfield a 14-7 win over Garden City in the Long Island Class II championship. The win was Newfield’s first LIC in school history, ending 53 years of waiting. Garden City entered the game 11-0 and the loss was the first time all season the Trojans were held to fewer than 16 points in a game.
