Saturday will mark the 11th Annual Crotty Tournament at Kellenberg High School, so make sure to check out all of the action on MSGVarsity.com Live Access beginning at 4:30 p.m. It will be a doubleheader featuring four Catholic High School basketball teams, two from New York City and a pair from Long Island.
The tournament honors the memory of Tom Crotty, a 1978 graduate of Maria Regina High School now known as Kellenberg who was tragically lost in the World Trade Center during the September 11 attacks.
The cross-region double dip starts with a prime match-up of Chaminade vs. Nazareth in the 4:30 p.m. slot.
Chaminade, currently standing at 10-5, has been led by their 6-foot-6 forward Jonathan Patterson. The big man headed to Bates College for lacrosse comes fresh off his career-high 29-point performance in Monday’s 75-60 non-league victory over Elmont. Patterson leads the Flyers with a 17.3 points per game average, and has scored in double-digits in 12 games this season.
Taking a look on the flip side of the coin is the reigning New York City champion Nazareth Kingsmen. Nazareth hailing from East Flatbush, Brooklyn has had a terrific start of the season going 12-3. The Kingsmen are led by one of the best dunkers in New York City in Samson Usilo. The junior forward has averaged 19.3 points and seven rebounds per game this season. Be sure to look for the relentless 1-2-2 press that the Nazareth defense plays for the entire game to frustrate the Flyers.
The nightcap starting at 6:30 p.m. will matchup the Kellenberg Firebirds and the Regis Raiders.
Regis has had a difficult 2012-13 campaign as they have had to battle a combination of injuries and tough competition all year. The Raiders began the season 0-11, but over their last five games they have a record of 2-3. One of the reasons for their recent success is the play of sophomore Charles Gavigan. Gavigan is currently averaging 9.5 points, four rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game despite playing with a bad ankle. In Regis’ first win of the season, Gavigan led the Raiders with 19 points in the 56-47 defeat of rival Salesian.
For the home school, Kellenberg has had a solid 2012-13 season. The Firebirds are currently 9-5 on the year, and are led by senior Jeremy Arthur. Kellenberg’s go-to-guy has some incredible stats over the course of the year. Classified as a guard, Arthur has posted an astounding 20.4 points, 6.7 assists, and 10.2 rebounds per game.
