Garden City, NY – As much excitement as the first game of MSGVarsity.com livecast doubleheader between Jericho and East Hampton gave, this one might have taken the cake. Inside a capacity-filled Motamed Field at Adelphi University, the Hicksville Comets were able to knock off the defending state champion Brentwood Indians, 2-0, in the Long Island Class AA Championship.

This battle, and it was definitely a battle from the kick-off, was one of the best games you will ever see in high school soccer.

Hicksville kept knocking on the door against Brentwood throughout the entire first half, but Indian keeper Raul Bonilla kept saying “No!” Numerous saves from the outstanding goalie, kept Brentwood in this game.

The stellar play of the keeper most notably was 12 minutes into the game. A direct kick by the Comets was sent in, and off a number of heads and finally off the sidebar, Bonilla swatted it away and kept Hicksville off the board. Bonilla made six saves in the half, and eight for the game.

However, the Comets were finally able to breakthrough a couple of minutes later. Lucas Munoz gained possession off a punt, then streaked down the left sideline, crossed a beautiful ball right onto the foot of Peter DiLorenzo at the penalty spot, and he delivered a low liner into the back right corner of the net for a pivotal 1-0 lead.

The score would remain that way into the second half, where action and tempers started heating up.

In the second half, it was the Indians that would dominate the offensive possessions. Although every time Brentwood would have an opportunity it was blocked and sent away by the stellar Hicksville defense.

So as time dwindled down, the Comets would look to close this one out, and they did just that off the boot of Kyle Poetzsch. The striker tore down the left sideline, and was able to beat Bonilla with 4:30 remaining that capped off the night for the Comets and delivered them the Long Island Championship.

The victory for Hicksville sends them upstate for the regional semi-finals where they will meet up with Section 1’s Shenendehowa at Middletown High School next Saturday at 11:15a.m.
