NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. —It was senior night at Ursuline Wednesday and the Koalas celebrated in style. First they recognized the outgoing senior class and their families and then they topped visiting Scarsdale, 57-31, in convincing fashion.
The Ursuline defense was nothing short of smothering and it led to numerous Scarsdale turnovers. Senior point guard and captain Arianna Apostolopoulos had eight points and eight steals and acted as Ursuline's leader.
“We definitely worked really hard both on defense and offense,” Apostolopoulos said. “We know that when we work hard on defense our offense comes together. It’s definitely a defense first mentality and that’s how we played and we did the little things right.”
If Apostolopoulos was the general on the floor, then junior Alyssa Lawrence was her ideal soldier. Lawrence (15 points, five rebounds) used her size and athleticism to control the paint and the Raiders simply could not stop her. Lawrence’s performance helped make this night a special one for the seniors.
“I love it, I love playing for the seniors and getting a win for them, especially a good win like this,” Lawrence said.
Shelby Zucker led the way for Scarsdale with 12 points, but the Raiders had a difficult time getting open looks and, with rebounders like Ursuline’s Lawrence, Patsy Kealey and Veronique Ntumba on the floor, Scarsdale had little opportunity for second chances.
Ursuline has played a brutal schedule facing teams like Mt. Vernon, New Rochelle and White Plains two times apiece. With the Section 1 playoffs just around the corner, now would be a good time for the Koalas to hit their stride and carry some momentum into the postseason.
“I hope we’re peaking at the right time,” Ursuline coach Beth Wooters said. “We do play a tough schedule and I always hope that it prepares us for the sectionals so we’ll see what happens.”
Ursuline finished up its regular season tonight with a record of 10-8. Scarsdale (9-8) will travel to Mamaroneck on Friday and try to finish up its season on a positive note.
Anything can happen once the playoffs come and a team on a hot streak always has the chance to make some noise.
