Top 10 Westchester/Hudson Valley hockey teams

    1) Suffern (15-2-2) — Is it time to panic in Mountie-ville? No, not at all. Despite closing out the season with a 1-1 tie against Pelham and a closer-than-expected 4-0 win over Clarkstown, Suffern is still head and shoulders above every other team in Section 1 Division 1. It would be a minor miracle if the Mounties weren't hoisting the championship plaque at West Point on Feb. 26.

    2) Pelham (12-5-2) — Talk about peaking at the right time, eh? The Pelicans have opened February on fire, securing wins over Rye and Massena and salvaging ties against Suffern and Salmon River. All four of the aforementioned teams have the talent to make a run to Utica. Based on recent results, Pelham has to be considered just as strong a favorite in Division 2 as Suffern is in Division 1.

    3) Monroe-Woodbury (16-1-1) — The Crusaders closed out the regular season with a 9-1 thumping of Lakeland/Panas on Saturday. Nick Marotta and Sam Enright led the way with two goals apiece. As the only two Section 9 hockey teams, Monroe-Woodbury and Newburgh will meet for the Division 1 title on Feb. 23. The Crusaders cruised past the Goldbacks, 10-1, earlier in the season, so there shouldn't be too much suspense in that one. Basically, Monroe will have plenty of time to prepare for a rematch against Suffern in the regional finals on March 3.

    4) Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville (16-3) — The high-scoring Eagles close out the regular season against White Plains on Wednesday. ETB stands as the most likely candidate to challenge Suffern for the Section 1 Division 1 crown at West Point.

    5) RCDS (12-8) — After a rough patch in the middle of the season, RCDS is back on the upswing. The Wildcats stretched their winning streak to five games with a 9-0 drubbing of Fieldston on Monday. As it stands, the Fairchester title is RCDS' to lose.

    6) Rye (13-5-1) — Rye split this past weekend upstate with a 7-0 win over Ogdensburg and a 6-3 loss to Thousand Islands. Wednesday's season finale against Division 2 contender John Jay-CR will be telling. With the playoffs right around the corner, Rye needs to prove the 5-0 setback to Pelham is truly a thing of the past.

    7) Iona Prep (10-12-2) — The Gaels showed heart in Monday's 4-0 season-ending loss to CHSHL powerhouse St. Anthony's, but it wasn't enough to avoid a two-game sweep. Iona — which loses its top three offensive weapons in Phil Logerfo, Jack McDermott and Gino Chiariello — will enter next season in quasi-rebuilding mode.

    8) Brewster (18-2) — Brewster has rebounded well from a 5-4 upset loss to Yorktown back on Jan. 27, reeling off four straight victories to close out the season. Sunday's narrow 6-5 win over Brewster was easily the Bears' most impressive win during the stretch. With a superstar Joe Wegwerth on its roster, Brewster has to be considered a serious Section 1 D2 contender.

    9) New Rochelle (13-6) — New Rochelle closes out the regular season against Sleepy Hollow/Irvington on Feb. 14. In terms of the playoffs, it wouldn't be wise to bet against coach Jim Tozzo. He's gotten the most out of his team all season.

    10) John Jay-Cross River (14-5) — Junior forward Frazier Bostwick was born to score goals, evidenced by the six-spot he put up in last Thursday's 8-2 win over White Plains. Of course, it's worth noting that usual starting goalie Chris Stangarone was relegated to the bench on the Tigers' Senior Day. Regardless, the Indians' postseason success will come down to their defense, which was lacking in Sunday's 6-5 loss to Brewster. Wednesday's tilt against D2 contender Rye will be a good litmus test heading into the sectionals.
