New Rochelle bounces back, beats Sleepy Hollow
At Sleepy Hollow, New Rochelle bounced back after dropping two meets at the Section 1 Dual Meet Tournament by defeating the home Horsemen 56-27. Overall, New Rochelle (4-2) won ten of the 15 matches, including seven by pin. Starting at 145-pounds, Sleepy Hollow (0-3) won two out of the first three matches for a 12-6 lead, but the Huguenots stormed back winning 9 out of 10 to pull away.
For New Rochelle, Nick Barabaria (3rd place in sectionals last year) won his 106-pound match by forfeit. AJ Barbaria won career match 98 with a technical fall victory in the 126-pound match. Aaron Butler (2011 sectional champ at 160-pounds) pinned his opponent in 59 seconds for the win at 170-pounds. Tyler Lilly remained undefeated on the season at 9-0 with a pin for the 220-pound victory.
Sleepy Hollow’s Steve Bencosme won a close 12-7 decision in the 138-pound weight class, while fellow junior co-captain Edwin Jimenez won his match by forfeit.
New Rochelle won the head-to-head matchup last year on its way to its 10th league title in a row. Sleepy Hollow finished second in the league last year. The first nine matches ended in a pin. Only three matches entered the third period.
