    Westchester/Hudson Valley Boys Basketball Rankings
    Records through (1/30)

    1. Mount Vernon (11-2): It’s far bigger news these days when the Knights lose than when they win, and they suffered one of the biggest defeats in the past decade last week in Florida. Mount Vernon, though, needed a kick like the one it got against Roman Catholic (Fla.). The Knights are now focused on winning the Gold Ball.

    2. Kingston (13-0): While Newburgh was beaten over the weekend by Poughkeepsie, the pressure mounts on Kingston as the target on its back widens. The Tigers are the heavy favorite to win a AA title in Section 9, a position the program hasn’t been in in some time.

    3. Stepinac (9-8): The Crusaders followed up an 11-point loss to Mount St. Michael at home on Friday with a convincing win over Spellman on Senior Day on Sunday at Stepinac. The Crusaders face St. John’s Prep at home on Tuesday before a rematch with the CHSAA’s best team, at Cardinal Hayes, on Friday.

    4. Tappan Zee (14-0): At home on Friday night, the Dutchmen dodged a big bullet, rallying from a double-digit deficit in the second half to beat Albertus Magnus. The best sign for TZ was that it was its defense keyed the comeback as they held the Falcons to 11 points in the third and fourth quarters.

    5. Iona Prep (14-2): A busy week for the Gaels includes league matchups with LaSalle on Tuesday and Xavier on Wednesday before Saturday’s showdown with rival New Rochelle. The matchup is part of a three-game showcase at New Ro.

    6. New Rochelle (9-4): The Huguenots returned from a very productive trip to Kentucky — where they won two out of three games — and blew past White Plains on Thursday behind a strong performance by Joe Clarke. Another win over their rivals should all but secure New Rochelle a Top 6 seed in the Class AA playoffs.

    7. Burke Catholic (8-2): A rough shooting afternoon keyed a 20-point loss to Albany Academy for Burke on Friday night, their second loss in three games. Burke has another marquee matchup coming up in two weeks when it hosts Stepinac on Feb. 11.

    8. Albertus Magnus (11-2): Albertus lost its chance of moving up the poll — and avenging its only loss of the season — when it squandered a second-half lead to Tappan Zee on Friday night. Albertus has Nyack and Nanuet on the schedule this week before a tough three-game close against Spring Valley, Pearl River and North Rockland.

    9. Byram Hills (11-3): Even though the Bobcats are the defending champs, Tappan Zee has stolen a bit of their thunder this season. Byram has its chance to get it back on Saturday when they take on TZ in a showcase event at New Rochelle. It’s the game of the year in Class A this season. The health of star guard Jeff Lynch is pivotal moving forward.

    10. Fox Lane (11-2): The Foxes enter the poll after a strong win over Clarkstown South on Friday night at Croton. They showed tremendous balance and getting improved play from the backcourt, especially Ben Korren, Robbie Shilstone and Carlito Carvalho. They could be in line for a No. 2 seed in Class AA.
