Bassick senior Demetrius Thomas has been named MSG Varsity's male FCIAC Athlete of the Week for Feb. 26-March 3 by a panel of athletic directors and MSG Varsity reporters. Thomas had 13 points, 15 rebounds and four assists to lead the Lions to their second straight FCIAC boys basketball championship, 64-48, over Trinity Catholic last Thursday. Thomas received MVP honors for the game, and also had a game-high 32 points in Bassick’s 75-62 semifinal victory over Bridgeport Central two days earlier. The sixth-seeded Lions reached the Class L quarterfinals with a 73-60 victory over Maloney Wednesday night.
What's your biggest athletic goal for 2012?
Thomas: "To win states. Repeating as FCIAC champion felt great too."
Who is your favorite teammate and why?
Thomas: "Devin Coleman. We've been playing together for a while. I like the way he handles ball. Devin has a high basketball IQ, and sees the floor well."
What's the best piece of advice you've received?
Thomas: "Just to go out and play hard and try to match the intensity from one game to the next."
Which athlete is your biggest influence?
Thomas: "Kobe Bryant. I try to emulate his moves, but its hard you know? Not too many people can."
What's your proudest accomplishment away from the game?
Thomas: "I had a job at Iona College's summer camp working with kids. That's something I like to do."
