FCIAC girls player of the week: Jessica DeMaio
Darien's Jessica DeMaio has been named MSG Varsity's female FCIAC Athlete of the Week for April 16-21 by a panel of athletic directors and MSG Varsity reporters. DeMaio fired a no-hitter at rival New Canaan as the Blue Wave won, 5-0, last Wednesday Waveny Park. The senior righty was just one walk shy of a perfect game as the only batter reached base on a walk in the sixth. DeMaio struck out 10, and was pitching with a one-run lead for the first five innings before Darien scored three runs in the top of the sixth for some insurance. DeMaio then struck out 10 for a second straight game when she led Darien to a 12-1 win over Greenwich last Friday. She scattered six hits in seven innings and Greenwich’s only run was unearned. DeMaio will try to walk on at UConn next season.
What's your biggest athletic goal for 2012?
DeMaio: "We haven't made it to the state championship game since 2009, so that's at the top of the list. We also want to repeat as FCIAC champs."
Who is your favorite teammate and why?
DeMaio: "That's a toss-up between my catcher (Olivia Gozdz) and my younger sister Rebecca (a freshman). Liv and I have been playing together for a long time along with our other captains Kelly Fahey and Courtney Bell. As pitcher-catcher we have a close relationship, she knows me so well. And I just love my sister, she's always the first one to encourage me and it's been great getting a chance to play on the same team as her."
What's the best piece of advice you've received?
DeMaio: "My dad (Jeff) reminds me to go out and pitch, and have fun with it. Sometimes it's easy to forget that we're out there because it's something we love doing."
Which athlete is your biggest influence?
DeMaio: "Jessica Mendoza played for the U.S. Olympic team, and I really like the way she carries herself on and off the field."
What's your proudest accomplishment away from the game?
DeMaio: "Being a member of the National Honor Society (DeMaio has a 3.9 GPA).
