2012 All-CT Region boys lacrosse team

Meet the athletes who excelled during the 2012 boys lacrosse season. The awards were selected by MSG Varsity's staff of reporters and editor.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Case Matheis, Darien

The Duke-bound senior attackman is leaving quite a legacy. Rated by many combines as the top scholastic player in the nation, Matheis graduates as the program's all-time leader in goals, assists and points, and is the first three-time All-American in Connecticut history. This season, Matheis piled up 63 goals, 46 assists and helped the Blue Wave capture their seventh state title in eight years. The 2011 MSG Varsity Tri-State MVP, Matheis was again selected to first-team All-Metro.

COACH OF THE YEAR
Alex Whitten, New Canaan

A humbling 13-3 loss to rival Darien on April 17 left the Rams at the crossroads with a 3-3 record. There's no doubt which direction they headed under the guidance of Whitten. All New Canaan did was rip off 16 consecutive victories -- highlighted by an 11-9 win over Ridgefield in the FCIAC championship game -- before falling to mighty Darien once again in the CIAC Class M finals.

TEAM OF THE YEAR
Darien

Defending California state champion Torrey Pines. Long Island powers Manhasset and St. Anthony's. No to mention every team from Connecticut on its schedule. And that was just the perfect in-state regular season for the Blue Wave, who after a one-goal loss to Ridgefield in the FCIAC semifinals went on to dominate the Class M tournament by a combined 62-15 en route to their ninth state championship.

All Connecticut Region: First team

ATTACK
Kevin Brown, Fairfield Prep: The junior first-team All-American had a starring role in both of the Jesuits' championship victories, totaling a confined five goals and three assists in the SCC and Class L finals.

Case Matheis, Darien: Player of the Year

Chris Nugent, Wilton: A first-team All-Americam, the senior finished with 50 goals in leading the Warriors to the FCIAC and Class M semifinals. Will play at Ohio Wesleyan next year.

MIDFIELDERS
Matt Blasco, New Canaan: The St. Joseph's-bound senior scored 45 goals this season, including four in the Rams' 11-9 victory over Ridgefield in the FCIAC finals. Blasco was named first-team All-State.

Matt Brophy, Fairfield Prep: It was quite a postseason for the senior, who scored half of the Jesuits' goals in an 8-6 win over Ridgefield in the CIAC Class L finals, then was named CHSCA Player of the Year to go along with first-team All-American honors. Will do a PG year at Deerfield Academy.

Sean Carroll, Wilton: A three-sport standout, Carroll earned Academic All-American and first-team All-State honors as a senior. Carroll, who took home the prestigious Lt. John G. Corr memorial Award at the Wilton H.S. special awards nigh, will play football and lacrosse at Middlebury College.

Henry West, Darien: After suffering a hairline fracture in his leg early in his junior year, West bounced back to have an outstanding senior season. The first-team All-American finished with 52 goals, including four in the state finals against New Canaan as he was named the game's MVP. A second-team All-Metro selection, West will play at Cornell.

DEFENSE
Tony Britton, Darien: A key piece to the Blue Wave's state championship run, the Cornell-bound senior was named a first-team All-American. Along with Matheis and West, Britton will represent the North in the seventh annual Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic in Maryland on June 30.

Andrew Hatton, Fairfield Prep: The first-team All-American was a backline anchor for a Jesuits team that went 7-0 in the postseason, and did not allow more than seven goals in any of those games.

Eric Persky, New Canaan: One of only four juniors named first-team All-American in Connecticut by U.S. Lacrosse, Persky and the Rams yielded double digits just three times all season -- and two of them came against Darien.

GOALIE
Tom Carey, New Canaan: The Bryant-bound senior was tremendous in the cage all season for the Rams, earning FCIAC title game MVP honors. Carey, a first-team All-American, saved more than 65 percent of the shots he faced, scooped up 53 ground balls and even scored five times.
