Welcome to MSGVarsity.com’s Memorable Mondays, a summer-long series that looks back on the top players, games and moments from the past season and gazes ahead to 2012-13. As the summer goes on, we’ll compile all the lists and post them here: www.msgvarsity.com/mondays. New Lists will be posted every Monday at noon.
In Week 6 of Memorable Mondays, we look at five of our favorite venues from the Connecticut Region.
Dunning Field, New Canaan: The Rams' primary football and lacrosse facility was already an envy of many teams, and the bar only got raised with the addition of an $80,000-plus state-of-the-art scoreboard. Reportedly the only school in all of New England with this type of scoreboard, New Canaan got its money's worth as it can broadcast live events and show replays. With a population of around 20,000, New Canaan is a small town -- but its football team enjoys a big home field advantage at Dunning Field where the Rams haven't lost in over four years.
Harbor Yard, Bridgeport: Either Webster Bank Arena or The Ballpark at Harbor Yard is enough to stand on its own merit, but when you combine the two there's no doubt the venue is one of the best in the area. Among the events held there this past year were the Northeast Christmas Classic at the Arena, and the FCIAC baseball finals at the picturesque Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
Mohegan Sun Arena, Uncasville: Getting a chance to play on the home court of the WNBA's Connecticut Sun is the goal of every CIAC high school basketball team, primarily because Mohegan Sun is the home of the state finals. This past season, St. Joseph celebrated its 11th state title and second straight on the court. And who can forget Watertown's fans -- nearly all of whom dressed in black -- that helped fill the lower level of the 12,000-seat arena during the Indians' first trip to the state finals since 1943.
Rentschler Field, East Hartford: The opportunity to play for a state championship is motivation enough for CIAC football teams, but throw in the chance to play at the 40,000-seat home of the UConn Huskies and it gets taken to another level. Although New Canaan and Staples would both fall in the 2011 state finals, there's no doubt the experience of playing at The Rent was an unforgettable one for every player whose cleats stepped on the Kentucky Bluegrass field.
Staples Stadium, Westport: MSG Varsity's cameras were on hand here to capture two of the most memorable games of the 2011 football season -- Staples' victory over Darien on a snowy Saturday morning in late October, and then the epic FCIAC championship game between Staples and Greenwich on Thanksgiving. Home to countless big games over the years, the Wreckers will now be able to host state playoff games as well, as the school broke ground on July 1 for the four poles that will support the much-anticipated stadium lights.
