David Hahn
Stamford senior Ben Pierre-Saint has been named MSG Varsity's male FCIAC Athlete of the Week for Feb. 13-19 by a panel of athletic directors and MSG Varsity reporters. Pierre-Saint captured his second consecutive CIAC Class LL championship when he went 4-0 to win the 132-pound weight class title last weekend. The top seed, Pierre-Saint defeated No. 2 Favon Williams of Hartford Public in the final, winning by technical fall, 22-7. Pierre-Saint was dominant throughout the tournament, first pinning Xavier’s Colin Cunningham in 3:39, before defeating Chris Blagman of Platt Tech/West Haven 19-3, and fourth-seeded Grober of Amity 23-9 in the semifinals.
What's your biggest athletic goal for 2012?
Pierre-Saint: "To win the State Opens this weekend and then New Englands. I'm going to the Open guns blazing."
Who is your favorite teammate and why?
Pierre-Saint: "I love them all. We don't have many in wrestling, so you're able to connect with each of them on some level."
What's the best piece of advice you've received?
Pierre-Saint: "Earlier in the season my brother told me my opponents don't don't deserve to beat me because I worked so hard and put so much into this year-round."
Which athlete is your biggest influence?
Pierre-Saint: "My off-season coach Charlie Branch was a state championing Virginia and got fourth in the NCAAs. Mainly he beats me up in practice, and not many people can do that."
What's your proudest accomplishment away from the game?
Pierre-Saint: "My first quarter grades were all A's and B's."
