NORWALK, CT — In the Class S state championship game at Brien McMahon High School, Joel Barlow took home its second state championship in school history with a 15-2 victory over Somers.
Barlow didn't allow a Somers goal over the final 38:58 of the game. Most of the defensive domination stemmed from a dominant offense. Mike Mattson controlled the majority of the game's faceoffs denying Somers possession.
"I felt responsible for our loss to Weston because I didn't win enough faceoffs," Mattson said. "Once we get possession to our offense, we score goals so that's what we focused on."
Nolan Stauffer dominated with five goals and two assists for the Falcons. Mattson and Liam Rooney added hat tricks. Jesse Beatty finished with two goals and two assists. Thomas Samaritano facilitated things early with a goal and three assists for Barlow.
"Coach told us that we hadn't won anything yet despite our season (because we lost to Weston in the SWC playoffs)," Mattson said. "He said we had to earn out here on the field today."
Barlow started slow and Somers even took a 2-1 lead in the first quarter, but Barlow dominated the second quarter behind Mattson's faceoffs and converting on the extra man advantage.
"That two-minute unrelease-able was key for us," Stauffer said. "Mike won us all the faceoffs and we scored four goals in that two minute span."
Somers's goals came from Alex Geas and Chris Hamilton.
