    Friends cruises to second-straight LIC

At the start, Jamie Genatt and Friends Academy couldn't finish. Then they showed that it's not how you start, it's how you finish. And the finish was the start of something special.

"I felt I had a lot of chances in the first half and I was only able to finish one of a bunch," Genatt said. "We had a nice little pep talk at halftime about finishing and within the first two minutes we had two or three goals."

Genatt scored the first of five second-half goals for Friends Academy, which cruised to a 6-0 win over Stony Brook to win its second straight Class C Long Island girls soccer championship at Denton Park.

Despite a barrage of first-half shots that were wide, high or off the crossbar or keeper, Friends Academy had just a 1-0 lead on Genatt's first goal at the half.

In the second half, the ball seemed to find nothing but net. Jessica Babicz sent a through ball down the middle of the box to Genatt, who angled a shot to the far post just 1:14 in. Alexis Toles added another goal just over a minute later on a header off a corner kick by Kristina Kim.

Krystina Iordanou, Babicz and Shekinah Pettway added goals as starting keeper Claudia Ratner, who didn't get a touch on the ball, had an easy day.

"We stayed strong," senior defender Amanda Edwards said. "We knew we had to get the ball out as quick as possible and I think we did that."

The score wasn't indicative of the game played by Stony Brook keeper Mikaela Stiklickas, who had 14 saves and was called, "the best keeper we've played," by Genatt.

Friends Academy (10-0-1) advances to the regional finals Saturday at Denton Park.

"It feels great to go back-to-back," Friends Academy coach Gail Baker said.
