Top 30 LI Players to Watch: Zach Sirico

Sayville tailback Zach Sirico has got some big shoes to fill.

Sirico was tapped midway through the season as what would be the heir-apparent to take over for quarterback Steven Ferreira - the all-time Long Island record holder for TD passes and passing yards.

When Ferreira broke his nose late into the Sayville season, coach Rob Hoss was faced with a situation he was not prepared until September to face. The then-junior filled in admirably in his first career start. He completed his only pass of the game for a 20 yard touchdown and ran for 153 yards with another rushing score.

Sirico wasn't done for the 2011 season. In Ferreira's finale, Sayville forewent the expected air-attack that Sayville and Ferreira proudly displayed and instead went to a ground and pound attack with Sirico getting the majority of the touches.

Sirico, who had scored nine touchdowns all year, ran roughshod at Stony Brook by scoring six rushing touchdowns in Sayville's record-setting 78-61 Long Island Championship win against Lawrence.

"From an offensive standpoint, it's as close to perfection as you can get," Hoss said following the win. "Zach played out of his mind."

Not a bad way to show he's ready to have the ball next season.

And with that performance, and the expectations surrounding him, Sirico is one our Top 30 players to watch on Long Island for the 2012-13 school year.
