Memorable Mondays: Top exciting endings
Welcome to MSGVarsity.com’s Memorable Mondays, a summer-long series that looks back on the top players, games and moments from the past season and gazes ahead to 2012-13. In Week 4 of Memorable Mondays, we look at five of the most exciting endings from New York City high schools.
Bishop Ford vs. Archbishop Molloy girls basketball: When Kamille Ejerta hit a baseline runner with 8.3 seconds left in the fourth quarter, the CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division I girls basketball semifinal between Bishop Ford and Archbishop Molloy seemed destined for overtime. Aaliyah Lewis, though, had other thoughts. The Falcons star guard took the inbound pass, drove toward the basket and heaved up a miracle shot that banked in with 0.4 seconds remaining to seal a 55-53 victory and send Ford into its first B/Q final March 1 in Park Slope.
JFK vs. Washington Irving boys soccer: The PSAL Class B final on Nov. 13 at Randall’s Island had plenty of drama throughout the match, including a hat trick by Washington Irving’s Itamar Alv Pereira, who tied the match at 3 five minutes from full time. Undeterred, JFK came back and Edwin Munoz, who moved from Peru three years ago, scored the championship-clinching goal in overtime, knocking in the winner after Kafoumba Doumbia headed Stephen Owusu’s corner off the crossbar to seal to wild 4-3 victory.
McKee/Staten Island Tech vs. South Shore football: With time winding down in the PSAL Cup Division final at Lincoln Nov. 27, McKee/Staten Island Tech quarterback T.J. Ferranola saw he had four receiving options for what would be the final play of regulation. He fired toward the end zone and bruising back Charlie D’Onigbinde came up with the ball despite being double-teamed. The 26-yard touchdown as time expired lifted the Seagulls to a 20-14 win over South Shore and a second straight title.
Tottenville vs. Curtis girls lacrosse: The PSAL girls lacrosse season couldn’t have reached a more extraordinary conclusion as rivals Tottenville and Curtis battled for the Class A title in a four-overtime thriller at Aviator Sports Complex on May 20. The teams went punch for punch, exchanging goals throughout regulation and the first two three-minute overtimes. After a scoreless sudden death third overtime period, Victoria Orlick ended the suspense with 1:04 left in the fourth OT, scoring her fourth goal of the game as the Pirates celebrated a second straight PSAL title with the 15-14 victory.
Wings vs. JFK boys basketball: It would be known as “The Shot.” After missing the front end of a one-and-one bonus, Wings guard Justin Jenkins watched JFK’s Louis Baltazar drive over him for what appeared to be the winning basket. In fact, the home crowd stormed the court believing the game was over. With 0.8 seconds left on the clock, Jenkins curled around a screen and caught Jaequan Brown’s pass in the corner. He put up a desperation shot while falling down and buried it, sealing Wings 55-53 win at JFK on Jan. 17.
