Players to watch: Jenna Hoffman, Molloy

Can you dig it?
Jenna Hoffman can.
There wasn’t a ball the Archbishop Molloy rising senior libero gave up on, none that were out of reach.
Sure she’s only 4-foot-11, but her volleyball skills aren’t measured in height. It’s all about desire and heart for Hoffman, the unquestionable leader of a young Molloy squad.
Pound for pound, Hoffman is arguably the city’s best volleyball player and she had a spectacular junior season, earning first team All-City honors by MSG Varsity and leading the Stanners to the Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan finals where they lost in a five-set thriller to rival St. Francis Prep.
Before that, Hoffman helped Molloy snap the Terriers six-year league unbeaten streak during the season and her 20 digs and three aces against Fontbonne Hall helped Molloy book its berth in the Brooklyn/Queens finals.
In that match, Hoffman had a remarkable lunging one-handed stab that went from a dig to a kill in the fourth set. It was a play that not only showcased her individual brilliance, but also epitomized the Stanners selfless play.
“That just shows you never give up,” teammate Maddie Casello said after the match. “Even if you think you’re not going to get it, throw yourself on the floor and make it happen and Jenna always does that.”
Led by Hoffman and a host of rising juniors and seniors, Archbishop Molloy should once again be among the city’s elite squads this fall.
