Defending champs 'Dozo back in PSAL final
In a rematch of last year’s PSAL Class A girls volleyball title game, Cardozo again defeated Susan Wagner, 25-23, 25-22, in the semifinals Saturday at York College.
The second-seeded Judges advance to the title game Monday night at Hunter College to play No. 4 Francis Lewis, which upset top-seeded Stuyvesant in the other semifinal.
“These girls are very talented,” Cardozo coach Danny Scarola said. “I’m happy that Queens will be represented in the finals. Wagner has a fantastic program and a good group of girls. We came out and played our best game of the year. I’m always proud when they give it their all.”
Leading the way for Cardozo (13-0), the defending city champions, was Ashley Grubler, who had 19 kills and 16 digs, Adrian Braciak, who had six kills and an ace, Jessica Lou had 28 assists and Amy Sung added 14 digs.
“We put up a good fight, but we can’t get too confident.” Lou said. “We still have things to work on in order to win it all.”
Added Sung: “I was so nervous. I’m excited that we won and that we’re in the finals. I’m glad we were able to shake off the mistakes and pull through.”
Third-seeded Wagner (15-1) was led by Karolina Gajda and Julia Bogdan, who had seven kills apiece, and Kristine Ciurcina, who had 18 assists.
“They’re a great team,” Wagner coach Marco Alteri said. “They were better. We didn’t lose, we were beaten. Our team is new and to get this far, I can’t ask for anytime more. We left it on the court and we played to win. They’re a good group of girls to be around.”
