2011 All-City girls volleyball team
Meet the athletes who excelled during the 2011 girls volleyball season in New York City.
The teams were selected by Dylan Butler.
FIRST TEAM
TALIA COLASANTE
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
St. Francis Prep, Sr., Outside hitter
There might not have been a harder hitter in the entire city. MVP of the prestigious Long Beach tournament, the senior outside hitter was almost unstoppable when she went for a kill. She had 22 of them in an epic five-set win as the Terriers knocked off archrival Archbishop Molloy in the Brooklyn/Queens final.
MARY CLAIRE BARTLETT
Brearley, Jr., Outside hitter
Bartlett is a five-tool volleyball player – a powerful hitter, a deft passer and the junior has the court savvy to boot. She guided Brearley to the NYSAISAA final for a second straight year where she had 15 kills in a losing effort against Fieldston.
MELISSA CHIN
Stuyvesant, Sr., Outside hitter
The 5-foot-3 outside hitter helped carry the Vixens to the PSAL Class A semifinals for the first time since 2004. Top-seeded Stuyvesant was upset by Francis Lewis, but Chin had 18 kills in her final high school match.
KELLY FLYNN
St. Francis Prep, Jr., Middle hitter
She suffered a mild concussion, but she returned to the court. And she twisted her ankle in the B/Q final but wouldn’t be denied. Her 18 kills and five blocks helped guide the Terriers to their fifth straight league title.
ASHLEY GRUBLER
Cardozo, Sr., Outside hitter
The 6-foot outside hitter guided Cardozo to a second consecutive PSAL title. She had 19 kills in the semifinal against Susan Wagner and 13 kills against rival Francis Lewis in the championship match.
JENNA HOFFMAN
Archbishop Molloy, Jr., Libero
Who said size matters in volleyball? The 4-foot-11 dynamo was one of the top players around, never giving up on a ball. She helped the Stanners snap St. Francis Prep’s six-year league winning streak.

SECOND TEAM
Ragina Anthony, OH, Francis Lewis, Sophomore
Catherine Egan, MH, Brearley, Senior
Arianna Francis, OH, Fieldston, Junior
Lauren Ganun, MH, Fontbonne, Senior
Katie Lang, S, Fontbonne, Senior
Dominique Watt, MH, Bronx Science, Junior

COACH OF THE YEAR
DANNY SCAROLA
Cardozo
Repeating as champion is one of the hardest things to do, especially as the favorite, but that’s just what Danny Scarola was able to do with Cardozo. It wasn’t easy and Scarola even had to have a heart-to-heart with star outside hitter Ashley Grubler, but when it was all said and done, the Judges ruled the volleyball court again.
