Meet the athletes who excelled during the 2011 girls soccer season in New York City.

The teams were selected by Dylan Butler.

    FIRST TEAM

    JENNIFER ANGIONE
    PLAYER OF THE YEAR
    Beacon, Sr., Forward

She had 19 goals and nine assists, stellar numbers for any striker, but a big reason why Angione is the Player of the Year is how she performed why the lights were brightest. In the playoffs, the senior scored seven of her team’s 15 goals, including both in a 2-0 win against rival Bronx Science in the PSAL Class A final.

    JULIA BERNHARDT
    Francis Lewis, Sr., Goalkeeper

Bernhardt only conceded five regular season goals and picked up her game in the playoffs, making big saves in the second round and quarterfinals, including a diving stop of MSIT star Jackie Bruno as the Patriots reached the PSAL Class A semifinals for the second time in four years.

    VICTORIA RODA
    Petrides, Sr., Defender

She entered the season as one of the top sweepers in the city, but Roda also spread her wings offensively and had 10 goals and four assists to help guide Petrides into the postseason.

    PHOEBE DAWKINS
    Defender, Senior
    Bronx Science

An MSG Varsity The Magazine cover girl before the start of the season, Dawkins guided the Wolverines to the PSAL title game as she had hoped. However, Bronx Science fell to Beacon in the final. Still, it was a banner year for Dawkins, who also had 16 goals and six assists.

    LIZA KAPELUS
    Defender, Senior
    Beacon

The Blue Demons didn’t concede a goal in the postseason for a second straight year, a tremendous accomplishment and a testament to Kapelus’ dominance in the defensive third.

    ALEX EASTON
    Beacon, Sr., Midfielder

Every soccer team needs an anchor in the midfield, a quarterback who makes everything go and that’s what Easton was to the Blue Demons, which captured a second consecutive PSAL Class A title. The senior had three goals and seven assists, but her contributions went far beyond statistics.

    RACHEL COPULSKY
    Riverdale, Sr., Midfielder

Riverdale’s No. 11 had 11 goals and 11 assists to help lead the Falcons to a second consecutive NYSAISAA title and extend their unbeaten streak to 41 consecutive games. The left-footed senior struck for an overtime penalty kick in the semifinals against Fieldston.

    GIANNA SMITH
    St. Joseph Hill, Sr., Midfielder

The senior erased the memory of last year’s stunning loss in the semifinals of the Archdiocesan playoffs by scoring the winning goals in both the Archdiocesan semifinals and finals, while also adding a pair of assists.

    JO HALLER
    St. Ann's, Sr., Midfielder

Haller ended her stellar high school career with a bang, scoring 27 goals and dishing out 19 assists to lead St. Ann’s to an undefeated AAIS title and second postseason crown in three years.

    ISABELLA BERTAGNA
    Riverdale, Sr., Midfielder

The senior midfielder scored 17 goals for Riverdale, including her team’s two biggest of the season. Bertagna netted the winner against Columbia in the semifinals and the lone goal in a 1-0 victory against Rye Country Day in the title game.

    JACKIE BRUNO
    McKee/Staten Island Tech, Sr., Forward

Her stellar high school career didn’t end with another PSAL title, but the UMass-bound Bruno had a standout season nonetheless, scoring 20 goals and setting up five others as the Sea Gulls claimed the Staten Island crown.

    SECOND TEAM

Kristen Drogsler, GK, Christ the King, Sophomore
Aimee Kasmally, D, St. Francis Prep, Junior
Jessica Dalhdorf, D, Poly Prep, Senior
Jackie Wideen, D, Bronx Science, Senior
Christina Viaggio, MF, Christ the King, Senior
Deirdre Ray, MF, Mary Louis, Senior
Shannon Rhodes, MF, Packer Collegiate, Senior
Summer Sofer, MF, Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy, Sophomore
    D.J. Glazer, F, Bayside, Junior
Pamela Wishart, F, Leon Goldstein, Junior
Danielle Fuller, F, Staten Island Academy, Senior

    COACH OF THE YEAR

    JOHN FAYAD
    Christ the King

There’s a soccer renaissance at Christ the King with the boys team reaching the CHSAA Class AA intersectional semifinals and John Fayad guiding the girls to their first-ever Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan title. It’s been a long and arduous process, but Fayad has been patient and now he’s reaping the rewards.
