Farmingville, NY – High-powered offense, good defense, and stellar pitching all equate to a win on the softball diamond, and on Thursday morning those at Sachem High School East were treated to a phenomenal display from one of Long Island’s best teams.

The high-flying Bay Shore Marauders, the defending Suffolk County Class ‘AA’ champions, improved their record to 5-0 with a 13-3 victory over the Flaming Arrows behind the efforts of Courtney Syrett, Michelle DeVito, and Briana Coan.

Syrett was a steady force in the batter’s box as well as behind the plate. The junior catcher finished her day by going 4-for-5 with 4 RBI that included a three-run blast that put an exclamation point on the victory.

DeVito led her squad on the pitching side. She hurled the complete game giving up three runs (one earned) on eight hits while striking out eight batters. Not to mention the junior also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

However, it was Coan who set the tone of this game. In the top of the first, Giana Panariello led off the game with a single, Kileen Martin sacrificed Panariello into scoring position, Syrett got herself on base with a double, then up came the senior. On a 2-2 pitch, Coan blasted the Marissa Smith offering way over the left-center field fence for the three-run home run.

Bay Shore appeared to enjoy getting their runs in threes on Thursday.

In the top of the third, Coan doubled off the wall in left-center, then with two outs DeVito singled up the middle that scored Coan from second. After DeVito’s RBI, Stephanie Ellewood walked, and Angelica Horne beat the throw on an infield single to load the bases. The next batter was pinch-hitter Breanna Susa who hit a slow roller to the left side of the infield, but a costly error allowed two more runs to score. The Marauders had taken a firm grip of this game with the score at 6-0.

However, Sachem East (3-3) had some fight in them.

They would squeeze out a run in the bottom half of the third when Samantha Marrone and Allison Ercolano had back-to-back hits, then Cassie Asselta drove in Marrone with an RBI fielder’s choice.

That would be the only run that the Flaming Arrows would put up against DeVito until the seventh.

DeVito would cool down the Arrows in the bottom of the fourth. In one of the quickest half innings in the game, the junior struck out the side, and gained momentum for her squad once again.

With that momentum, Bay Shore was able to score 7 runs in the top halves of the sixth and seventh with Syrett accounting to three of those with her left-centerfield homerun. The Marauders would give up two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but were able to cap the day with DeVito’s eighth strikeout to end the ballgame.
